Why do welding fumes need to be extracted?
Welding fumes aren’t just an irritation: WorkSafe New Zealand identifies them as a health hazard that can cause both short-term and long-term harm. Manganese in particular has been linked to serious neurological effects with ongoing exposure.
Under New Zealand's health and safety legislation, you have a duty to eliminate or minimise your team's exposure to welding fumes so far as is reasonably practicable. A mobile welding fume extractor is one of the most practical ways to meet that duty, especially if your workshop doesn't already have fixed extraction built in. This is a self-contained, mobile welding fume extraction unit built around a pulse-jet self-cleaning filter. Everything you need runs from the one cabinet on castors, so you can wheel it to wherever the welding is happening rather than being tied to a fixed extraction point.
The flexible extraction arm lets you position the hood close to the work, which is where fume capture is most effective. It uses a pleated filter cartridge, and controls are kept simple: start, stop, and an emergency stop button on the front panel, with a factory-set pulse cleaning cycle that keeps the filter clear without any input from you.
As well as a power connection, it needs a compressed air supply connected via an 8mm push-fit hose - this drives the pulse-cleaning system that keeps the filter clear. If your workshop doesn't already have a compressor, you'll need one to run this unit.

How does this welding fume extractor keep running clean?
The pulse cleaning system continuously cleans the filter element while the unit runs, so you don't need to stop and clean it manually during the working day. The controller comes factory set, so it's ready to switch on and use straight away.
To start, you release the E-stop and press the start button. When you're finished, the stop button triggers a short automatic clean-up cycle before the unit switches off. It runs on a 3-phase, 415V/50Hz power supply.

How much maintenance does this welding smoke collector need?
Very little day to day maintenance is needed. The filter cleans itself automatically while the unit runs. A short weekly check (covered in the manual) keeps everything running well, and the dust tray should be emptied regularly.
Do I need PPE to use this welding fume extraction system?
Yes, in addition to your usual welding PPE, appropriate PPE should be worn whenever removing dirty filter elements or whenever dust may be present. This can include dust masks, safety glasses, overalls, and gloves. Hearing protection is also recommended, since this unit is often installed alongside other noisy workshop equipment.
How often can I start and stop this welding smoke collector?
The fan motor shouldn't be started more than six times within a one-hour period. For most workshops running normal welding jobs this won't be an issue.
